Wechselpräpositionen (Akkusativ/Dativ)

Wechselpräpositionenfor English Speakers

Introduction

Nine German prepositions (in, an, auf, über, unter, vor, hinter, neben, zwischen) switch between accusative and dative depending on meaning. Accusative = movement TO a place; dative = being AT a place. English doesn't change anything: 'on the table' is the same whether you're putting something there or it's already there. This is one of the trickiest A2 concepts.

German vs English

In German

Ich stelle das Buch auf den Tisch. (accusative = movement onto)

In English

I put the book on the table. ('on' stays the same)

Key Difference

German signals movement with accusative; English uses the same preposition either way.

In German

Das Buch liegt auf dem Tisch. (dative = location at)

In English

The book is on the table. ('on' stays the same)

Key Difference

German signals static location with dative; English has no such distinction.

Common Mistakes for English Speakers

Ich gehe in dem Kino. (intended: I go to the cinema)

Using dative for movement — English 'to' doesn't distinguish, so learners miss the direction signal.

Ich gehe in das (ins) Kino.

Das Bild hängt an die Wand.

Using accusative for a static location — the picture IS hanging (not being hung), so dative is needed.

Das Bild hängt an der Wand.

Practice Examples

Ich lege das Handy auf den Tisch.

I put the phone on the table.

Das Handy liegt auf dem Tisch.

The phone is on the table.

Er hängt das Bild an die Wand.

He hangs the picture on the wall.

Memory Tip

Motion = accusative (where TO?), still = dative (where AT?). Wohin → Akk, Wo → Dat.
