Differenzierte kausale und konzessive Konnektoren
Kausale/konzessive Konnektoren — for English Speakers
Introduction
Advanced German uses refined connectors for cause (zumal — especially since) and concession (nichtsdestotrotz — nonetheless, gleichwohl — nevertheless). English has similar formal words (moreover, nonetheless, notwithstanding), so the register is familiar. These connectors elevate your writing from everyday to academic or journalistic. They often trigger specific word orders — adverbial connectors invert, subordinating ones send the verb to the end.
German vs English
In German
Die Maßnahme ist sinnvoll, zumal die Kosten gering sind.
In English
The measure makes sense, especially since the costs are low.
Key Difference
Zumal = especially since. Subordinating, so verb goes to the end.
In German
Nichtsdestotrotz müssen wir weitermachen.
In English
Nonetheless, we must continue.
Key Difference
Nichtsdestotrotz = nonetheless. Adverbial, so it triggers verb-second inversion.
Common Mistakes for English Speakers
Zumal, die Kosten sind gering.
Treating zumal as an adverb — it's a subordinating conjunction, so verb goes to the end.
Nichtsdestotrotz wir müssen weitermachen.
Forgetting inversion — after the adverbial connector, the verb comes before the subject.
Practice Examples
Das Projekt lohnt sich, zumal die Nachfrage steigt.
The project is worthwhile, especially since demand is rising.
Die Kritik war hart. Gleichwohl machte er weiter.
The criticism was harsh. Nevertheless, he continued.
Es gab Probleme. Nichtsdestotrotz war das Ergebnis gut.
There were problems. Nonetheless, the result was good.
Memory Tip
ZUMAL = 'especially since' (subordinating → verb end). NICHTSDESTOTROTZ/GLEICHWOHL = 'nonetheless' (adverbial → inversion).
