Futur I - Zukunft

Futur Ifor English Speakers

Introduction

German future tense uses 'werden' + infinitive, similar to English 'will' + verb. However, German often uses present tense for future events when context is clear ('Ich komme morgen' = I'm coming tomorrow), more freely than English does. Futur I also expresses assumptions about the present ('Er wird wohl krank sein' = He's probably sick), a usage English handles differently.

German vs English

In German

Ich werde morgen kommen. (I will come tomorrow)

In English

I will come tomorrow.

Key Difference

Very parallel structure: werden ≈ will. The infinitive goes to the end in German.

In German

Er wird wohl krank sein. (assumption about present)

In English

He's probably sick. (no future tense in English)

Key Difference

German uses Futur I for present-time guesses; English just uses adverbs like 'probably'.

Common Mistakes for English Speakers

Ich werde kommen morgen.

Putting the infinitive before the time word — in German, the infinitive goes to the very end.

Ich werde morgen kommen.

Ich wille kommen.

Translating 'will' literally — German uses 'werden', not a word resembling 'will'.

Ich werde kommen.

Practice Examples

Wir werden das schaffen.

We will manage that.

Er wird nächstes Jahr studieren.

He will study next year.

Es wird morgen regnen.

It will rain tomorrow.

Memory Tip

WERDEN is your future helper — conjugate werden, then put the main verb as infinitive at the end.
