Appositionen und Parenthesen
Appositionen und Parenthesen — for English Speakers
Introduction
Appositions and parentheses insert additional information into a sentence: 'Der Autor, ein bekannter Linguist, betont die Wichtigkeit' (The author, a well-known linguist, emphasizes the importance). English uses identical structures — commas, dashes, or parentheses mark the insertion. The German challenge is maintaining correct case: appositions must match the case of the noun they describe, a requirement English doesn't have since it lacks cases.
German vs English
In German
Der Autor, ein bekannter Linguist, betont...
In English
The author, a well-known linguist, emphasizes...
Key Difference
Structurally identical — comma-set apposition after a noun. German requires case agreement.
In German
Die Reform – von vielen kritisiert – trat in Kraft.
In English
The reform — criticized by many — took effect.
Key Difference
Same dash-parenthetical structure. Both languages use em dashes for emphasis.
Common Mistakes for English Speakers
Ich habe den Autor, ein bekannter Linguist, getroffen.
Using nominative for the apposition — it must match 'den Autor' (accusative): einen bekannten Linguisten.
Berlin, Hauptstadt von Deutschland, hat viel zu bieten.
Omitting the article and using 'von' instead of genitive — the apposition should include the definite article and use genitive.
Practice Examples
Berlin, die Hauptstadt Deutschlands, hat viel zu bieten.
Berlin, the capital of Germany, has a lot to offer.
Mein Bruder, ein erfahrener Arzt, hat mir geholfen.
My brother, an experienced doctor, helped me.
Das Buch — ein Bestseller seit Jahren — wurde verfilmt.
The book — a bestseller for years — was made into a film.
Memory Tip
Appositions are NAME TAGS for nouns — they must match the noun's case. In nominative: ein Linguist. In accusative: einen Linguisten.
