Introduction

German allows nested subordinate clauses that stack verb-final constructions: 'Obwohl er weiß, dass es schwer ist, versucht er es.' In English, nesting works too ('Although he knows that it's hard, he tries'), but the verbs stay in their normal position. In German, each clause pushes its verb to the end, creating a cascade of verbs at clause boundaries. Reading and producing these nested structures is a key B2 skill.

German vs English

In German

Obwohl er weiß, dass es schwer ist, versucht er es.

In English

Although he knows that it's hard, he tries.

Key Difference

Same nesting logic; German stacks verbs at clause ends while English keeps normal order.

In German

Ich glaube, dass er kommt, wenn er Zeit hat.

In English

I believe that he'll come if he has time.

Key Difference

Both nest clauses — German requires verb-final in each subordinate clause.

Common Mistakes for English Speakers

Obwohl er weiß, dass es ist schwer, versucht er es.

Keeping English word order in the inner clause — 'ist' must go to the end of the dass-clause.

Obwohl er weiß, dass es schwer ist, versucht er es.

Obwohl er weiß, dass es schwer ist, er versucht es.

Forgetting inversion in the main clause after the long subordinate block.

Obwohl er weiß, dass es schwer ist, versucht er es.

Practice Examples

Er sagte, dass er kommt, sobald er fertig ist.

He said he'll come as soon as he's finished.

Ich weiß, dass du weißt, dass ich Recht habe.

I know that you know that I'm right.

Weil er glaubt, dass es wichtig ist, macht er weiter.

Because he believes it's important, he continues.

Memory Tip

Nested clauses = Russian dolls — each subordinate clause wraps its verb at the end. Unwrap from inside out.
