Temporalsätze mit nachdem, bevor, während

nachdem/bevor/währendfor English Speakers

Introduction

German temporal conjunctions nachdem (after), bevor (before), and während (while) work similarly to English, but with a crucial twist: 'nachdem' requires a tense shift — the nachdem-clause must be one tense further in the past than the main clause. English rarely enforces this. All three conjunctions send the verb to the end of their clause, following standard German subordinate clause rules.

German vs English

In German

Nachdem er gegessen hatte, ging er. (tense shift required)

In English

After he had eaten, he left. (tense shift optional)

Key Difference

German strictly requires the tense shift after nachdem; English often skips it.

In German

Während sie kochte, räumte er auf. (simultaneous actions)

In English

While she cooked, he cleaned up.

Key Difference

Very parallel structure — the main difference is German verb-final order in the clause.

Common Mistakes for English Speakers

Nachdem er aß, ging er spazieren.

Using the same tense in both clauses — nachdem demands Plusquamperfekt when the main clause is in past.

Nachdem er gegessen hatte, ging er spazieren.

Bevor ich schlafe, ich lese ein Buch.

Forgetting to invert the main clause after the bevor-clause.

Bevor ich schlafe, lese ich ein Buch.

Practice Examples

Nachdem wir gegessen hatten, gingen wir spazieren.

After we had eaten, we went for a walk.

Bevor du gehst, ruf mich bitte an.

Before you leave, please call me.

Während er arbeitete, hörte er Musik.

While he worked, he listened to music.

Memory Tip

NACHDEM = 'after' + tense shift mandatory — the nachdem-clause is always one tense deeper in the past.
