Passiv im Präsens
Passiv Präsens — for English Speakers
Introduction
German passive uses 'werden + Partizip II' where English uses 'is/are + past participle'. 'Das Buch wird gelesen' = 'The book is being read'. The concept is identical — the object becomes the subject. The difference is that German uses 'werden' (to become) as the passive helper, which can confuse English speakers who associate 'werden' with future tense. Context always clarifies.
German vs English
In German
Das Buch wird gelesen. (The book is being read)
In English
The book is read / is being read.
Key Difference
German uses werden, English uses 'is/are'. The participle goes to the end in German.
In German
Die Tür wird geöffnet. (The door is being opened)
In English
The door is opened.
Key Difference
Same structure: passive helper + past participle. German word order places the participle last.
Common Mistakes for English Speakers
Das Buch ist gelesen. (= it's already done, not ongoing)
Using 'ist' instead of 'wird' — 'ist gelesen' means the action is complete (Zustandspassiv), not ongoing.
Die Briefe werden geschicken.
Using the infinitive instead of the past participle — passive requires Partizip II, not the base form.
Practice Examples
Die E-Mail wird gerade geschrieben.
The email is being written right now.
Hier wird Deutsch gesprochen.
German is spoken here.
Das Essen wird vorbereitet.
The food is being prepared.
Memory Tip
WERDEN + Partizip II = something is BECOMING done — werden is the passive engine in German.
