Finalsätze mit damit und um...zu
damit / um...zu — for English Speakers
Introduction
German has two ways to express purpose: 'damit' (so that) and 'um...zu' (in order to). English has the same split: 'so that he understands' vs 'in order to understand'. The rule is simple: use 'um...zu' when both clauses share the same subject; use 'damit' when the subjects differ. English speakers find this logical once stated, though they may default to 'damit' everywhere.
German vs English
In German
Er arbeitet viel, um Geld zu verdienen. (same subject)
In English
He works a lot in order to earn money.
Key Difference
Same structure: um...zu = in order to. German puts 'zu + infinitive' at the end.
In German
Ich erkläre es, damit alle verstehen. (different subjects)
In English
I explain it so that everyone understands.
Key Difference
Damit = so that. Required when the subjects differ, just like English.
Common Mistakes for English Speakers
Ich lerne Deutsch, damit ich verstehe.
Using damit when both subjects are 'ich' — um...zu is preferred when the subject is the same.
Er lernt viel, um zu seine Prüfung besteht.
Mixing up the word order — in um...zu constructions, 'zu' goes directly before the infinitive at the end.
Practice Examples
Ich spare Geld, um ein Auto zu kaufen.
I'm saving money in order to buy a car.
Sprich lauter, damit ich dich höre.
Speak louder so that I can hear you.
Er liest viel, um sein Deutsch zu verbessern.
He reads a lot to improve his German.
Memory Tip
Same subject? Use UM...ZU (in order to). Different subjects? Use DAMIT (so that).
