Modalverb müssen
müssen — for English Speakers
Introduction
German müssen means 'must' or 'have to' — very similar to English. But there's a dangerous false friend: 'nicht müssen' means 'don't have to' (no obligation), NOT 'must not' (prohibition). For prohibition, German uses 'nicht dürfen'. This single difference causes more confusion for English speakers than any other modal verb.
German vs English
In German
Ich muss arbeiten. (I must work / I have to work)
In English
I must work. / I have to work.
Key Difference
Positive müssen = positive must. This part is identical.
In German
Ich muss nicht arbeiten. (I don't have to work)
In English
I must not work. (I am forbidden to work)
Key Difference
CRITICAL: 'nicht müssen' = don't have to. 'Must not' = 'nicht dürfen' in German.
Common Mistakes for English Speakers
Du musst nicht rauchen! (intended: you must not smoke)
The biggest false friend: 'nicht müssen' means 'don't need to', not 'must not'. Use 'nicht dürfen' for prohibition.
Ich muss zu arbeiten.
Adding 'zu' before the infinitive — English 'have TO work' tempts learners, but modals take bare infinitives.
Practice Examples
Ich muss heute früh aufstehen.
I have to get up early today.
Musst du morgen arbeiten?
Do you have to work tomorrow?
Wir müssen jetzt gehen.
We have to go now.
Memory Tip
Remember: 'nicht müssen' = 'don't NEED to' (relaxed). 'Nicht dürfen' = 'FORBIDDEN' (strict).
