Indirekte Rede mit Konjunktiv (erweitert)

Indirekte Rede (erweitert)for English Speakers

Introduction

Advanced indirect speech uses Konjunktiv I as the primary mood, with Konjunktiv II as backup when K1 is ambiguous (identical to indicative). 'Er sagte, die Lage habe sich verbessert' (He said the situation had improved — K1). When K1 looks like indicative (e.g., 'sie haben' = K1 of 'sie haben'), switch to K2: 'sie hätten'. English has zero grammatical marking for reported speech — this entire system is uniquely German.

German vs English

In German

Der Minister sagte, die Lage habe sich verbessert. (K1)

In English

The minister said the situation had improved.

Key Difference

English shifts tense (has → had); German shifts mood (indicative → K1). Different strategies, same goal.

In German

Er betonte, er hätte davon nichts gewusst. (K2 as backup)

In English

He emphasized he had known nothing about it.

Key Difference

German switches to K2 when K1 would be ambiguous; English just uses past tense.

Common Mistakes for English Speakers

Always using Konjunktiv II instead of Konjunktiv I.

K2 is the backup, not the default. Formal German expects K1 in reported speech.

Use K1 first (sei, habe, komme). Only switch to K2 when K1 = indicative.

Er sagte, er hatte nichts gewusst. (indicative in formal text)

Using indicative in formal written German — journalism and academia require Konjunktiv for reported speech.

Er sagte, er habe nichts gewusst. (Konjunktiv I)

Practice Examples

Sie berichtete, man müsse weitere Maßnahmen ergreifen.

She reported that further measures needed to be taken.

Er behauptete, er sei unschuldig.

He claimed he was innocent.

Die Experten sagten, die Daten hätten sich bestätigt.

The experts said the data had been confirmed.

Memory Tip

K1 is the first choice for reported speech. If K1 looks like normal indicative, call K2 for backup. It's a tag team.
