Konjunktiv II (vollständig)

Konjunktiv II vollständigfor English Speakers

Introduction

At B2, you move beyond 'würde + infinitive' to the original Konjunktiv II forms of strong verbs: käme (would come), ginge (would go), wüsste (would know). English lost most of its subjunctive forms centuries ago (the lone survivor: 'If I were'). German preserves dozens of these forms, and using them marks you as an advanced speaker. They're formed from the Präteritum stem with an umlaut and -e ending.

German vs English

In German

Wenn ich reich wäre... (If I were rich...)

In English

If I were rich... (English subjunctive 'were')

Key Difference

English keeps 'were' as a relic subjunctive; German has distinct subjunctive forms for many verbs.

In German

Hätte ich Zeit, käme ich. (Had I time, I'd come)

In English

Had I time, I would come.

Key Difference

German uses 'käme' (original K2 form) where English needs 'would come' — more compact.

Common Mistakes for English Speakers

Wenn ich reich würde sein.

Using würde with sein — wäre is the required form. German avoids würde for common verbs (sein, haben, modals).

Wenn ich reich wäre.

Wenn ich das wüsste, würde ich es dir sagen. → correct, but learners avoid wüsste.

Over-relying on würde (Wenn ich das wissen würde) — original forms sound more natural for frequent verbs.

Wenn ich das wüsste, würde ich es dir sagen.

Practice Examples

Wenn ich mehr Zeit hätte, würde ich reisen.

If I had more time, I would travel.

An deiner Stelle ginge ich zum Arzt.

In your place, I would go to the doctor.

Wenn er käme, wäre das schön.

If he came, that would be nice.

Memory Tip

Original Konjunktiv II = Präteritum stem + umlaut + -e: kam → käme, ging → ginge, wusste → wüsste.
