Höfliche Aufforderungen und Bitten
Höfliche Aufforderungen — for English Speakers
Introduction
English speakers know 'could you' and 'would you' for polite requests — German has direct equivalents: 'könnten Sie' (could you) and 'würden Sie' (would you). There's also 'dürfte ich' (might I), which sounds more formal. These subjunctive forms work almost identically to English, making them one of the easier A2 concepts for English speakers.
German vs English
In German
Könnten Sie mir helfen? (Could you help me?)
In English
Could you help me?
Key Difference
Nearly identical structure and politeness level — this is a natural transfer from English.
In German
Würden Sie bitte das Fenster öffnen?
In English
Would you please open the window?
Key Difference
Same politeness mechanism; the infinitive just goes to the end in German.
Common Mistakes for English Speakers
Können Sie mir helfen? (grammatically correct but less polite)
Using present 'können' instead of subjunctive 'könnten' — like saying 'Can you' instead of 'Could you'.
Würden Sie bitte öffnen das Fenster?
Placing the infinitive too early — it must go to the end, with the object before it.
Practice Examples
Könnten Sie das bitte wiederholen?
Could you please repeat that?
Würden Sie mir den Weg zeigen?
Would you show me the way?
Dürfte ich Sie etwas fragen?
Might I ask you something?
Memory Tip
Polite German = English polite forms. Können → könnten = can → could. Just add the umlaut for courtesy.
