DativVerb with preposition

sich bedanken bei + Dativ

to thank (someone)

The verb sich bedanken bei (to thank (someone)) always goes with the preposition bei, and here bei takes the Dativ (dative). The preposition bei always takes the Dativ, whatever the verb. The article follows the case: der Nachbar → beim Nachbarn (bei + dem contracts to beim). It is used with people (or institutions), so you refer back with the preposition and a pronoun: bei ihm. The question is “Bei wem bedankst du dich?”
