Superlativ - höchste Stufe
Superlativ — for English Speakers
Introduction
German superlatives always use -sten (like English -est for short adjectives), but there's no equivalent of 'most' for longer words. 'The most interesting' is simply 'das interessanteste'. German also has a unique pattern: 'am + adjective + sten' for predicate use — 'Er ist am schnellsten' (He is the fastest). Like comparatives, common adjectives often gain an umlaut.
German vs English
In German
der schnellste / am schnellsten (the fastest)
In English
the fastest
Key Difference
German has two forms: 'der schnellste' (before nouns) and 'am schnellsten' (standalone).
In German
das interessanteste Buch (the most interesting book)
In English
the most interesting book
Key Difference
German always uses -ste/-sten ending; never 'meist' (most) with adjectives.
Common Mistakes for English Speakers
Das ist das meist interessante Buch.
Translating 'most interesting' literally — German always uses the -ste ending, never 'meist'.
Er ist der schnellst.
Missing the -e ending or confusing the two superlative patterns (der -ste vs am -sten).
Practice Examples
Das ist das beste Restaurant.
That is the best restaurant.
Sie läuft am schnellsten.
She runs the fastest.
Er ist der Größte in der Klasse.
He is the tallest in the class.
Memory Tip
AM___STEN for standalone ('He is am schnellsten'), DER/DIE/DAS___STE before nouns ('der schnellste Mann').
