Stilebenen und Register
Stilebenen — for English Speakers
Introduction
German has clearly marked register levels: colloquial (kriegen, Klamotten), standard (bekommen, Kleidung), and formal (erhalten, Bekleidung). English has similar register layers (get/receive/obtain, clothes/clothing/attire), so the concept is familiar. At C1, you need to consistently match register to context — mixing registers sounds unnatural. This includes vocabulary choice, sentence structure, and even modal particles (present in casual, absent in formal).
German vs English
In German
kriegen → bekommen → erhalten (get → get → receive)
In English
get → receive → obtain
Key Difference
Same three-tier register system; both languages have informal/standard/formal alternatives.
In German
sagen → mitteilen → kundtun (say → inform → announce)
In English
say → inform → proclaim
Key Difference
Both languages escalate formality through vocabulary choice.
Common Mistakes for English Speakers
Using 'kriegen' in a business email.
Register mismatch — 'kriegen' is casual; formal correspondence requires 'erhalten'.
Using 'kundtun' in casual conversation.
Over-formalizing in speech sounds pretentious — match the register to the situation.
Practice Examples
Casual: Ich hab das Buch gekriegt. Standard: Ich habe das Buch bekommen. Formal: Ich habe das Buch erhalten.
I got / received / obtained the book.
Casual: Er hilft mir. Formal: Er unterstützt mich bei der Aufgabe.
He helps me. / He assists me with the task.
Casual: Klamotten. Standard: Kleidung. Formal: Bekleidung.
Clothes / clothing / attire.
Memory Tip
German register = three gears: casual (friends), standard (news), formal (court). Choose the right gear for the road.
