Präteritum der Modalverben
Präteritum Modal — for English Speakers
Introduction
German modal verbs in past tense (Präteritum) are actually easier than regular Perfekt — they just change the stem and add simple endings, with no past participle needed. 'Konnte' (could), 'musste' (had to), 'wollte' (wanted) are used in everyday speech. English speakers find this intuitive because 'can → could' and 'must → had to' follow a similar pattern.
German vs English
In German
Ich konnte nicht kommen. (konnte = could)
In English
I couldn't come. (can → could)
Key Difference
Both languages shift the modal stem — können → konnte, can → could. Very parallel.
In German
Sie musste arbeiten. (musste = had to)
In English
She had to work. (must → had to)
Key Difference
German keeps a single word (musste) where English switches to 'had to'.
Common Mistakes for English Speakers
Ich habe gekonnt kommen.
Trying to form Perfekt with modal verbs — for modals, Präteritum is the standard past form.
Ich wollte zu helfen.
Adding 'zu' before the infinitive — English 'wanted TO help' tempts this, but modals take bare infinitives.
Practice Examples
Ich konnte gestern nicht kommen.
I couldn't come yesterday.
Sie musste den ganzen Tag arbeiten.
She had to work all day.
Er wollte uns besuchen.
He wanted to visit us.
Memory Tip
Modal past tense drops the umlaut: können → konnte, müssen → musste, dürfen → durfte — just lose the dots!
